Public comment splits on Palace Theater project as tax concerns meet downtown push

Public comment on the proposed Palace Theater project revealed a divide between concerns over public funding and support for downtown revitalization.

Andrew Clement and John Heron spoke in opposition, raising concerns about rising property taxes and the financial strain on residents and small business owners. Both urged City Council to consider existing burdens, with Heron also pointing to ongoing parking challenges and the lack of a clear solution tied to the project.

Others framed the proposal as a long-term investment in Thomasville’s downtown. Greg Smith described the restored Palace as a potential anchor for activity and civic pride, while Ben Wofford, speaking for PACE, said the project is intended as a flexible community space capable of hosting a range of events, from concerts to children’s theater.

Supporters also pointed to broader demand for gathering space. Steve Tackles cited strong interest in event venues, while Jim Gregory called the project the final piece in long-term downtown planning efforts. Jill Simpson said a revitalized space could help attract younger residents, and Joe Gray stated ongoing concerns that there is little to do in the city.

Tourism Director Cameron Marsden said increased events could bring visitors, support local businesses, and grow revenue without placing additional tax pressure on residents.
