Soaking Rain Headed for Davidson County This Weekend, Then a Sunny, Warm Week

Soaking Rain Headed for Davidson County This Weekend, Then a Sunny, Warm Week

The National Weather Service office in Raleigh is forecasting steady rain Saturday into Sunday across the Piedmont Triad, which could help ease dry conditions across the region. A recent climate blog post featured on the NWS page says September’s extended summer heat gave the drought new strength.

Friday: Mostly cloudy and mild

The morning started cool and calm, with nearby observations showing overcast skies, 58 degrees and no wind. The afternoon from Uptown Lexington to Thomasville should be mostly cloudy, with a high around 75 and a light northeast breeze. Clouds thicken tonight, with a low near 60.

Saturday: Cooler, breezy, and turning wet

Showers may move through before 10 a.m., and rain becomes likely after noon, with a 70 percent chance. It will feel more like fall, with a high near 66, northeast winds of 9 to 15 mph and gusts up to 26 mph.

The heaviest rain arrives Saturday night. Showers are all but guaranteed, with a half to three-quarters of an inch possible. Gusty east winds could reach 25 mph, so secure loose Halloween decorations and patio furniture before bed. Anyone heading out on High Rock Lake this weekend should watch for choppy water and plan around the wind.

Sunday: Warmer, with a chance of thunder

Rain continues Sunday, and a thunderstorm is possible, with a 90 percent chance of precipitation and another quarter to half inch possible. Temperatures warm back to about 75 as winds shift from east to south in the afternoon. Showers and storms remain possible into the early evening, then mostly taper off overnight, with a low near 62.

By Sunday night, many Davidson County yards could see around an inch of rain or more. Farmers, gardeners and homeowners nursing dry lawns will welcome it. Drivers on I-85, Business 85 and U.S. 52 should leave extra room on wet roads, especially Saturday night.

The skies clear quickly once the rain moves out. Monday looks mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Tuesday turns sunny and warm, with a high near 80. Wednesday stays sunny at about 77, and Thursday cools a bit to around 73 under mostly sunny skies.

Expect clouds Friday, rain Saturday afternoon and night, possible storms Sunday, and a bright, warm stretch starting Monday.
