Thomasville prepares to host signature Memorial Day Parade and weekend commemorations

Memorial Day weekend in Thomasville has grown into one of the South’s most significant commemorations, anchored by a parade and series of events that honor the lives of U.S. service members lost in combat.

The city’s proximity to the North Carolina Vietnam Veterans Memorial brings added meaning to the weekend. Located just two miles south of Thomasville along I-85 at the Rest Area near mile marker 100, this somber site recognizes the 1,607 North Carolinians who were killed or went missing in action during the Vietnam War. It has become a place of reflection and remembrance not only for veterans, but for families and communities across the state.

Throughout Memorial Day weekend, ceremonies at the Wall provide space for the public to gather, honor the fallen, and engage in quiet reflection. The memorial remains a focal point of Thomasville’s broader efforts to observe the holiday with reverence and community involvement.

On Sunday, May 25, the city will host a public concert by the 208th Army Band, featuring patriotic music performed by one of the Army’s premier ensembles. The concert will be followed by a community gathering at Cushwa Stadium, where attendees are invited to enjoy free hot dogs and fellowship in a casual, welcoming environment.

Adding a dynamic element to the day’s events, the Golden Knights parachute team—the official demonstration team of the U.S. Army—will perform a precision jump. Their performance serves as both a demonstration of military skill and a moving tribute to those who served and sacrificed.

Each year, Thomasville’s Memorial Day events draw attendees from across the region and reflect the city’s ongoing dedication to honoring American service members. Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend and take part in remembering the cost of freedom.
